Although as of , the murder rate remained the highest in the country, the bulk of New Orleans crime takes place in neighborhoods far outside the tourist corridors. Single females should take precautions as they would in any city, but need not be unduly afraid to go out alone. Stick to known tourist areas like the French Quarter, the city's the most famous and historic neighborhood. A thriving local scene has developed on Frenchmen Street, just past Esplanade.

The bars on Bourbon Street, especially close to Canal Street are super douchey bars with ultra loud crappy hip hop and Sweet Home Alabama cover bands, really trashy strip clubs, foam cowboy hats and airhorns. The strip clubs are fun though. See what other places made the cut.
The music scene is focused on jazz, but opens itself up to other types for the occasional music festival. And oh yeah, there are those things called strip clubs too…. The best time to enjoy it is probably in the spring.
